นับตั้งแต่จุดเริ่มต้นของมหกรรมกีฬาที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2502 (ค.ศ. 1959) ในชื่อ “กีฬาแหลมทอง (SEAP Games)” ก่อนจะเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “กีฬาซีเกมส์ (SEA Games)” อย่างเป็นทางการในปี พ.ศ. 2520 (ค.ศ. 1977) มหกรรมกีฬานี้ได้จัดขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่องมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน รวมแล้ว 32 ครั้ง
